Spend three days learning the specialist techniques needed to weave your own traditional-style willow backpack with a lid.
This is a course for experienced willow weavers who are looking to develop their skills and take on a more challenging basket-making project.
Based on a traditional German apple-picking basket, this sturdy backpack design is made for carrying heavier loads comfortably on your back. I originally learnt to make this basket many years ago from Dieter Deringer. Over the years, I've adapted and developed the design to incorporate a lid, making it both practical and beautiful.
These are wonderfully strong baskets that will last a lifetime and are perfect for carrying heavier loads, whether you're heading out foraging, shopping, gardening or simply want a beautiful and practical basket to use every day. Organic hemp straps provide adjustable, comfortable carrying options, combining traditional basketry with thoughtful, practical design.
Over the three days, I'll share the specialist techniques involved in creating the backpack, taking you through each stage of the process. Because of the techniques involved, previous willow weaving experience is essential for this course. You'll leave with a beautiful, finished backpack, new weaving skills and the confidence to take on future projects.
A beautiful countryside setting
I'm particularly pleased to be offering this course at this wonderful new countryside venue. I first tried it out in September and immediately knew it was somewhere I'd love to return to. It's peaceful, beautiful and we were so well looked after by the owner, Jan.
This is a more intimate setting with a maximum of 6 places available. Four of the students who joined me for the September course have already secured their places on this one, so there are now only two places available.
Lunch included
Lunch is included in the course and is very much part of the experience. Jan will provide homemade soups, cheese and cake, with tea, coffee and biscuits available throughout the three days.
