About Joe Gregory
Basket Maker | Sculptor | Teacher | Advocate of Craft as Healing
I’m Joe Gregory and I’m proud to be a willow basket maker and sculptor. My journey with willow began back in 2004, when what started as a simple hobby soon became a lifelong passion. At the same time, I was recovering from a serious illness, and weaving became much more than a pastime, it offered me a way to heal, to steady myself and to slowly rebuild. Before it ever
became a business, basket making was how I found recovery and renewal. By 2008, I realized that this humble craft could not only sustain me but allow me to create a life full of meaning. What began at my kitchen table has grown into a fulfilling career that has connected me with so many wonderful people along the way.
As a teacher, I’ve had the privilege of working with students of all ages and abilities, from young children discovering the joys of creation, to adults recovering from illness or injury. I believe that weaving is more than just a skill - it’s a way to ground yourself, to heal, and to connect with something much deeper than just the craft itself. It’s a tactile journey that allows us to slow down and reconnect with nature; with the materials in our hands and with ourselves.
Since making weaving my full-time profession in 2014, I’ve had the pleasure of sharing my craft across the UK and internationally, through workshops, private sessions, and public projects. I’ve been fortunate to work with larger organisations, as well as teach from my own space here in West Yorkshire. I’ve always believed in the power of community and sharing what I know, which is why I am deeply committed to making this craft accessible to everyone-from beginners to advanced weavers.
I am so grateful for the chance to pass on my knowledge, and it fills me with pride to see my students return year after year. Weaving is a craft that can be picked up at any stage of life, and I am honored to help guide many on their own journeys - whether they’re seeking personal fulfillment or considering a future as professional makers themselves.
My approach to teaching is patient, welcoming, and always tailored to the needs of the student. I offer a variety of in-person workshops, 1:1 sessions, and online resources to make sure everyone can experience the beauty and joy of willow weaving.
It’s a privilege to be part of a tradition that stretches back thousands of years, and it’s even more humbling to know that what I’ve learned along the way can be passed on to future generations. My hope is that through my teaching and the work I do, I can help others discover a craft that has brought so much peace and satisfaction to my life.
