Elegant, humble, and steeped in Irish heritage the Skib is a shallow, round serving basket once central to daily life in rural Ireland. Traditionally used to rinse and serve boiled potatoes, families would gather around the Skib and eat communally from its surface, making it both a functional object and a centrepiece of togetherness.
In this two-day workshop, you'll learn to weave your own Skib using the finest English willows in a variety of natural tones. Inspired by the revival work of renowned Irish basketmaker Joe Hogan, this workshop brings a classic design back to life blending history with hands-on making.
You'll be guided through Irish-style weaving techniques, focusing on creating a bold, sculptural border that frames the basket and offers excellent practice for beginner and improving weavers alike. While simple in form, the Skib is a rewarding project—balanced, beautiful, and highly versatile.
Finished pieces make excellent serving trays or can be displayed as decorative wall hangings that carry both charm and legacy. Whether you're here for the heritage, the hands-on learning, or simply the joy of weaving something timeless, this workshop offers a truly meaningful day of craft.
